Daily Squares on Mochi Games!  But . . .

Please Help!

Dear Visitors,

I have submitted Daily Squares to the Mochi games network, and it has been accepted.  Good news!  But the problem is that it needs a little love.  As a new game on the network, it has not been very many hits.  The way a game gets popular on their network is with game plays, but being a new game, and being a math game, and yes, being my “hello world” first flash game, it does not get much publicity on the network.

I have been tweeking the game to make it more enjoyable – and easier.  It has been in beta for a while, and the release to Mochi Games means an end to the beta phase.  I will be coming out with more games in the near future, but I will not limit myself to pure math games – but I do have an idea for an interesting puzzle/logic game that may soon go into development.

Magic Squares Math Game: Daily Squares

Today is 10-10-10, and in celebration of this auspicious occasion, we are officially launching our online math game: Daily Squares!

If you have read the previous posts on magic squares, then you will have a good idea of how to play.  If not, then it is not difficult to learn.  You have to arrange the numbers such that all of the rows, columns, and diagonals all add up to 34.

Meet the Magic Square Family!

Like magic squares, there are arrangements of numbers similar to magic squares that have interesting properties.  These arrangements are called heterosquares and anti-magic squares.  Unlike magic squares, these numbers do not form the same product when you sum the rows, columns, and diagonals.  Rather, the sums of the rows, columns, and diagonals are all different from each other.

Heterosquares

Heterosquares can be thought of as the black sheep of the magic square family.  The sums of their rows, columns and diagonals are not all the same – they are all different from each other.

An example of a (4 x 4) heterosquare:

Heterosquares exist for all tables equal to and larger than 3 rows  x 3 columns.

Anti-magic Squares

Like heterosquares, the sums of the rows, columns, and diagonals of anti-magic  squares are all different.  However, the sums form a sequence of consecutive 2n+2 numbers – cool beans!
