Can you name this mystery scientist?

He was a French philosopher, mathematician, and scientist.   He was thought to be the first person to maintain that one can use of reason to develop the natural sciences.  You can thank him for the coordinate system that we often use today.  Also, among many other accomplishments, he made philosophical arguments for the existence of God.
